Two More Unlocked Cars Entered in Westwood After Earlier Vehicle Break-Ins

Two additional unlocked cars on Sunrise Road and Briar Lane were entered overnight in Westwood, near the Norwood town line, on Wednesday, June 24, but nothing was stolen from them, according to Westwood Police, following a spate of motor vehicle break-ins reported to police on Friday, June 19. Although close in time and pattern, it is unclear whether the break-ins of June 19 and June 24 are related.

On Friday, June 19, between 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., Westwood Police received numerous reports of unsecured motor vehicles having been broken into, some with items stolen, and some simply rummaged through. An unlocked Audi SUV with the key left inside was stolen from Salisbury Drive, but other reports on June 19 were from the other side of town in Islington. Complaints came in from residences on Cobleigh Street, Hillview Road, Westdale Road, Elm Street, Grafton Avenue, Smith Drive, Carroll Avenue, and Cherry Street.

On June 24, two additional break-ins into unlocked vehicles were reported on Sunrise Road and Briar Lane, near the Norwood town line.

Investigators have determined that after the Audi SUV was stolen in Westwood, it was driven to Dover, Medfield, and Millis. It was identified by video in Medfield and was sighted by police in Millis, according to Westwood Detective Lieutenant Christopher Aylward.

The stolen Audi was recovered when Brockton Police saw it parked on the side of a road, apparently abandoned, with its license plate detached and placed inside the vehicle. Otherwise, there was no reported damage to the vehicle.

Items discovered inside the Audi are believed to be the result of thefts reported in Dighton and Rehoboth.

Police believe more than one person is involved in the thefts. In one case, at least two suspects related to the stolen Audi were captured in the same frame on security video, wearing face coverings. The suspects are believed to have worn gloves and to have broken into vehicles in the early morning hours. While Detective Lieutenant Aylward noted no specific make or model of vehicle affected, he observed that the affected vehicles appear to all have been left unlocked.

Thanks to Detective Lieutenant Christopher Aylward and Westwood Police Department for sharing this news with Westwood Minute.
