The news described in this installment of Westwood Minute's weekly Police Log article series is primarily based on selected incidents from the Westwood Police Department's daily log, and information provided by Detective Lieutenant Christopher Aylward and police staff to Westwood Minute through written records and conversations. Occasionally, Westwood Minute may incorporate facts that it obtains from other sources into these stories.
Road Rage on Washington Street over Being Cut Off
9:27 a.m. A caller reported being followed into the parking lot of Roche Bros. supermarket on Washington Street after cutting off another car. The other driver reportedly drove back and forth near the complainant’s car several times and became argumentative. The driver was no longer at the scene when police arrived.
Fraudster Complains to Bank about Increased Security
12:25 p.m. A resident of Stonegate Lane complained that, after opening a home equity line of credit, an unknown person had tried to transfer money out of the account. The resident reportedly closed the account and opened a new one, but another attempt was made to transfer money out of the new account. The resident’s bank implemented extra security measures.
In all, it appears that four attempts were made by an unknown person to transfer money out of the account. The bank reportedly was contacted by the fraudster, who complained about the extra security measures to prevent the transfers. No loss of money has been reported.
Shoplifting Suspect Arrested and Trespassed
3:31 p.m. Police responded to the Target store on University Avenue, where a suspected shoplifter was detained in the store office. A 42-year-old woman from Weymouth was suspected of failing to pay for concealed merchandise valued at $104. The merchandise included coffee, deodorant, hair care products, and clothing. She was trespassed from the store and arrested for shoplifting.
Loud Banging on Door
10:49 p.m. A resident of York Way reported loud banging on the door. Police checked the area and found nothing amiss.
Fireworks Disturbance II
9:05 p.m. A resident of Alder Road complained of a disturbance, telling police that neighbors were setting off fireworks in a nearby backyard.
Man Walking In and Out of Traffic
1:53 a.m. A Westwood Police officer observed a Dedham Police officer speaking with a male on Providence Highway and responded to assist. The male reportedly had been walking in and out of traffic. He informed the officers that he was heading back to the Budget Inn.
Suspect Flees State Police
7:22 a.m. Westwood Police responded to a call for mutual aid from Massachusetts State Police regarding a vehicle that had failed to stop. The suspect, identified as a resident of Lawrence, had exited Interstate 95 south. His vehicle, a 2022 Kia Stinger, was discovered abandoned in the parking lot of Wegmans supermarket on University Avenue. State Police discovered that the suspect had attempted to get a room at the nearby Courtyard by Marriott, and police also discovered that a neighbor of the suspect was driving on University Avenue around the same time. However, the suspect was not located.
Car Crashes Into Stop Sign
7:30 p.m. Dedham Police alerted Westwood Police to a report of a blue sedan crashing into a stop sign while exiting Interstate 95 North/Route 128 North into Westwood. Westwood Police located the downed sign and searched for the blue sedan but did not find it.
Noise Complaint from Home Construction at Night
7:49 p.m. Police received a noise complaint from Dover Road regarding construction at a home at that road.
Misreading Traffic Signal Results in Collision
9:02 p.m. Police responded to a two-vehicle crash on University Avenue at the Canton Street intersection involving a Kia Telluride and a Honda Accord. The driver of one vehicle appears to have mistaken a green light meant for other traffic as a signal for her to proceed, resulting in a collision between the two vehicles.
Fireworks Disturbance I
9:23 p.m. A resident of Willet Pond Drive complained about hearing fireworks, but was unable to pinpoint their location.
Report of Stolen Motor Vehicle
3:01 a.m. Westwood Police received an alert from Millis Police regarding a stolen motor vehicle – a blue Hyundai with a Florida license plate - that was last seen heading east on Route 109 from Millis. The vehicle was not observed by police in Westwood.
Service of Restraining Order
12:13 p.m. Following unsuccessful attempts by Boston Police to serve a restraining order on a Boston resident, Westwood Police located the man at his place of employment on Southwest Park in Westwood. The document was served.
Shoplifting Suspect Flees after Being Stopped with Daughter
3:23 p.m. Police received a report from the Target store on University Avenue regarding a suspected repeat shoplifter. In the latest incident, the suspect was shopping with her 7-year-old daughter, who was holding two items that were not scanned at the self-checkout. Upon being stopped by store staff, the suspect provided identification but appeared nervous and left. The unpaid merchandise was valued at $60. She has been trespassed from the store.
Road Rage Incident Over Being Passed
1:03 p.m. Police responded to a road rage incident between the drivers of two vehicles on High Street, in the area of the Westwood Police Station. The drivers provided differing accounts of what happened. Police believed that the first vehicle was stopped and that the driver of the second vehicle maneuvered around the stopped vehicle to pass. The driver of the first vehicle reportedly followed the passing vehicle into a nearby High Street business plaza, where both drivers began to argue. Each accused the other of punching them in the face. An officer advised the parties – a female from Norwood and a male from Millis – that they could press charges and pursue claims in court. Both declined.
Taking a Break
2:27 p.m. Police received a report that two juvenile males were peering over the Interstate 95 overpass from High Street in Westwood. Police investigated and determined that the boys were taking a break from riding their bikes and watching traffic.
Road Rage after Hand Gesture
4:50 p.m. A Mansfield resident complained of being followed to her place of employment on Station Drive, following a road rage incident on Dedham Street, near the boundary line between the towns of Canton and Westwood. After a driver reportedly began honking his horn at her, the Mansfield resident gestured with her middle finger and continued driving to work. The other driver, a Westwood man, reportedly followed her and yelled at her.
Westwood Resident Charged with Shoplifting
8:36 p.m. Police were summoned to Wegmans supermarket following a report of a shoplifting in progress. Store staff observed the suspect paying $9.47 for some merchandise but failing to pay for other merchandise that she reportedly had concealed in a large green bag. She was intercepted and discovered to be in possession of unpaid merchandise valued at $294. The items included limoncello, magnesium, medication, beauty products, and food. The suspect, a Westwood resident, was charged with shoplifting and summoned to court.
