DEDHAM – Norfolk County Sheriff Patrick McDermott announced today that his office recently intercepted and confiscated 35 sublingual strips of Suboxone from an inmate attempting to illegally smuggle the substance into the facility. The value inside the facility for the contraband recovered is approximately $14,000.

“The introduction of illegal drugs into our facility threatens the wellbeing and recovery of the justice-involved individuals here doing the hard work of turning their lives around,” said Sheriff McDermott. “Our diligent and thorough screening process that we have at the NCSO is designed to keep those we house safe. This incident is proof that our efforts are necessary and effective. The staff at the NCSO are to be commended for their vigilance.”

When prescribed, and under proper medical supervision, Suboxone assists patients with reducing their dependency on opioids and decreases the severity of withdrawal symptoms. It can be used along with therapy and other recovery tools to break cycles of addiction.

Like other opioid replacement medications, Suboxone is a controlled substance, and its unauthorized introduction into the House of Correction threatens to undermine the recovery work of justice-involved individuals with substance use disorder.

The Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office provides a comprehensive set of recovery resources for justice-involved individuals with substance use disorder, including individual and group counseling, medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD), recovery panels connecting participants to community partners, and a residential substance abuse treatment (RSAT) program.
