Police Log: Two Arrests, Vehicle Fire, Possible Charges to Camp Counselor

The news described in Westwood Minute's Police Log article is primarily based on selected information from the Westwood Police Department's daily log and information provided by Lieutenant Christopher Sheehy and police staff. Occasionally, a few facts from other sources may be woven into these stories.

Sunday, August 28th

Westwood PD makes arrest for sex related offense

2:02 a.m. Stoughton Police requested assistance from Westwood Police in arresting a person at a Country Lane address for a felony crime involving a sex related offense. Westwood Police located the individual at 6:00 a.m. and took the individual into custody, to be held until Stoughton Police arrived to take custody.

Saturday, August 27th

Harassment from a business transaction

7:35 a.m. Police were notified that a resident of Abbey Road obtained a temporary harassment prevention order, due to multiple contacts from the subletter of her old apartment in another town.

Arrest of fleeing shoplifter from Wegmans

7:22 p.m. Units were dispatched to Wegmans in response to a report of a larceny in progress. A member of Wegman’s loss prevention staff flagged down police and described the perpetrator as a blonde woman wearing a grey shirt and pants.  When staff confronted her for leaving the store with a carriage full of unpaid groceries, she left the cart in the parking lot and fled into a nearby restaurant.

Police entered the restaurant and observed the woman hurriedly entering the women’s restroom. An officer placed her under arrest and and transported her to the police station where bail was set at $190. The woman, a 37 year-old from Hopedale, was released on bail just before 10 p.m. 

The items taken were groceries worth $490.88. They included common food items such as English muffins, pilaf, Red Bull drinks, cat food, Pirate’s Booty, salad, mushrooms, avocado, tiramisu, and chicken.

Friday, August 26th

Troubling trash

4:19 a.m. A caller reported hearing someone going through her trash barrels on Briar Lane, but did not see anyone. Police responded to check the area but also did not see anyone.

Hit-and-run investigated

7:55 p.m. Dedham Police contacted Westwood Police for assistance with investigating a hit-and-run. The incident had occurred in Dedham, and Dedham Police had reason to believe that the fleeing vehicle belonged to a Westwood resident on Ridge Road. Westwood Police visited the home but did not find the vehicle or person present. Dedham Police will continue the investigation.

Wednesday, August 24th

Returning stolen bike from Facebook trade

12:56 p.m. A resident of Carroll Avenue reported to police that the resident’s minor son had taken part in a Facebook trade that apparently involved a stolen bike. The child had obtained a bike, identified as "SE Chonky." He was then contacted by an individual from Worcester who claimed the bike had been stolen. The Worcester resident retrieved the bike from the Westwood resident. 

Vehicle engine fire on Washington Street

2:49 p.m. Police received a report of an engine fire on Washington Street at the Clapboardtree Street intersection. A 2018 Chevy Express, appearing to be a work truck, was emitting flames from its engine area. Police directed traffic while Westwood Fire extinguished the flames. The vehicle was rendered safe to be removed by a towing company a little more than half an hour later, at 3:27 p.m.

Charges considered for counselor who gave vape pen to camper

3:04 p.m. Police responded to Cat Rock parking lot at Hale Education at the request of a summer camp supervisor. The supervisor informed police that a camp counselor was being terminated for giving a vape pen to a minor camper. The supervisor requested that police escort the young woman, a 21 or 22 year-old, off the property. Police did so. Police also attempted to contact the mother of the minor camper to inquire whether she desired to pursue charges. So far, there has been no reply from the camper's parent.

Assistance with restraining order

6:31 p.m. A party from out-of-town called police to request assistance with a restraining order on an estranged spouse.

Monday, August 22nd

Suspicious scrap metal collector

1:11 p.m. An officer of a company located in the Southwest Park reported suspicious activity to police. The employee saw a white van with its door open, parked next to the company’s dumpster. 

Police used the van’s license plate number to contact the owner of the vehicle. The individual, a 59 year-old man from Walpole, told police he was looking for scrap metal. The investigating detective gave the man a notice of trespass, informing him that he would not be allowed on the property. The man indicated that he would not return.
