Westwood’s School Committee has unanimously decided at its meeting this Monday morning, March 27, 2023, to offer the position of Westwood Public Schools Superintendent to Timothy Piwowar, who is current superintendent of Billerica Public Schools. The decision was made during a remote, online, public session of the committee’s deliberations over three finalists for the position.
Mr. Piwowar’s experience as a superintendent was repeatedly cited as a factor moving his candidacy ahead of Ian Kelly, interim superintendent of Dedham Public Schools and Rebecca Kidwell, assistant superintendent of curriculum, instruction, assessment & professional development of Rockland Public Schools.
School Committee took about a 15 minute break for Vice Chair Tony Mulllin to convey School Committee’s decision to Mr. Piwowar (pronounced pi-BO-bar, with emphasis on the second syllable).
Following the break, Mr. Mullin returned to the public meeting to announce that Mr. Piwowar had responded with an enthusiastic “yes,” and cited his positive interactions with the Westwood community.
School Committee appointed Mr. Mullin and Maya Plotkin, who both co-chaired the superintendent search committee, to enter contract negotiations with Mr. Piwowar. The committee hopes to be in a position to approve a contract by the time that it next meets in the first week of April.
Updated 3/27/2023 at 9:51 p.m. A correction has been made to Ian Kelly's job title which is "interim superintendent" and not "assistant superintendent." Also, a typographical error has been corrected.
Sunny, with a high of 91 and low of 63 degrees. Sunny in the morning, partly cloudy during the afternoon and evening, clear overnight.
This needed to happen 5 years ago. But now the real wrangling begins as MPT will fight to get as much $$$ as they can from the state as possible”just compensation.”
I appreciate all of the work and time that the FS1 Steering Committee and Select Board have put into this process. I've also noticed a big difference in communication around this from the town on Facebook and Westwood Wire. This feels like a much different process than the first time around.
Combing the FS1 vote with the general election makes a ton of sense, and in fact, makes me wonder why not do this will ALL elections instead of holding town elections in April?
Just a reminder that you can e-mail the FS1 Committee at FS1Committee@westwoodma.gov with questions/feedback, etc.
Two different votes for the Project?
First one in October for 'site selection, budget, and funding sources' for a new FS1.
Then, a November vote for 'designing, constructing, equipping, and furnishing' of a new FS1.
Seems repetitive.
