In a what Westwood Public Schools' (WPS') Director of Orchestras Alicia Winslow called "another record-breaking year," over 150 student musicians from elementary, middle, and high schools performed on Tuesday evening, May 23rd, together as an orchestra at the All Town String Concert in Westwood High School's auditorium.
Hand-in-hand with the record-breaking number of participants for the WPS music program was the record-breaking audience in attendance. Ms. Winslow called it the largest she had ever seen in the auditorium for such a performance. Ms. Winslow had also made similar remarks for each of the past few years -- it seems the WPS music program is experiencing a healthy and continued growth spurt, as student participation increases steadily each year.
The year-end concert was a culmination and showcase of months of lessons and hard work for the students. Take a listen to a clip of the finale, Electric Sinfonia by Lauren Bernofsky, below.
Sharing the directorial responsibilities for the night was Director Theresa Fritz, who directed the high school ensemble while Ms. Winslow directed the middle school and elementary school ensembles. Also offering the students guidance was Cello Instructor Johann Soults, who positioned himself among the cellists, offering support and expertise during this public performance -- a first for many of the young musicians.
