Police Log: Bail is $10K for Mysterious Motorcyclist Charged with Intent to Distribute Class D Drug

The news described in Westwood Minute's weekly Police Log article series is primarily based on selected incidents from the Westwood Police Department's daily log, and information provided by Lieutenant Christopher Sheehy and police staff through written records and conversations. Occasionally, Westwood Minute may weave a few facts that it obtains from other sources into these stories.

Sunday, August 11th

Assisting Arrest of Violent Felon

10:02 a.m. A Randolph Police lieutenant contacted Westwood Police requesting assistance in arrest of an individual believed to be employed at the Courtyard Marriott on University Avenue. He was wanted for several violent felonies. Westwood Police went to the location and made the arrest. When two Randolph Police officers arrived, Westwood Police transferred custody of the man to them.

Saturday, August 10th

Skipping Scans of Items at Self-Checkout

5:47 p.m. Police received a report of two males stealing merchandise from Target on University Avenue. Asset protection staff informed police that the males were seen scanning lower cost items at the self-checkout registers, but neglecting to scan higher cost items. They left with unpaid items totaling $709, including a $400 speaker, a $219 gas grill and a Micro kickboard. Staff observed them placing items into a blue Honda Civic in the parking lot.

When asset protection staff approached them to request that they show a receipt, one suspect fled. The other remained and answered that he did not speak English. When the asset protection staff member began speaking Spanish, the second suspect likewise fled.

One suspect is described as having black hair with a brown “strip” on top of his head, and wearing a white tee shirt. The second suspect is described as wearing a black Nike shirt and black Nike hat.

A license plate was recorded for the suspects’ vehicle. This case has been passed to detectives.

Thursday, August 8th

Kia Sportage Stolen

9:45 a.m. An officer went to Courtyard Marriott on University Avenue to speak to a guest whose grey, Kia Sportage rental car had been stolen from the hotel parking lot. It was parked outside the Brigham Women’s facility the previous night.

Attempt to Redirect Direct Deposit

11:39 a.m. An employee of Westwood at Town Hall contacted police about a suspicious email that appeared to be an attempt to change the direct deposit information for a town employee. The email was sent from a Gmail account with no connection to the town employee. Police are pursuing a search warrant for Google Incorporated to provide email subscriber information.

Wheel Stolen Off Parked Car

1:41 p.m. Police responded to Courtyard Marriott on University Avenue where a man from Jacksonville, Florida complained that the right, front wheel on his rented, grey, Kia sedan was missing. He had parked overnight, and noticed it missing the next day.

Wheel Falls Off Traveling Car

12:07 p.m. Police assisted a woman from Dorchester whose vehicle was disabled on University Avenue near Station Drive, after her vehicle’s left, rear wheel had fallen off and the bumper was damaged due to the car sitting low to the ground.

The woman told police that she pulled off Interstate 95 onto University Avenue when she heard a strange noise while driving her 2008 Volvo XC90. She had recently had her brakes inspected. An officer determined that the wheel may not have been properly secured with lug bolts after the inspection.

Wednesday, August 7th

Scrap Metal Is Not Necessarily Abandoned Property

3:32 a.m. An officer responded to a report of an individual removing scrap metal from a dumpster at Ira Acura Westwood on Providence Highway. The officer observed a silver Cadillac Escalade near the business’s recycling area and saw a man in the dumpster with scrap metal in his hands. Police advised the man, a resident of West Roxbury, that the scrap metal was not abandoned property and that he did not have a right to take it. The man placed the scrap metal back in the bin and left.

Two-Car Collision in Shopping Center Parking Lot

6:55 p.m. In University Station parking lot on University Avenue, a 2017 Volvo driven by a man from Hyde Park struck the right, front quarter of a 2021 Honda driven by a woman from Norwood. The Norwood woman and one of her passengers was transported to Newton Wellesley Hospital. The parties provided different accounts of what had happened. No citation was issued.

A Deep-Seated Need for Mail

7:38 p.m. The owner of the Budget Inn on Providence Highway complained to police that a prior guest had cracked a glass door when he slammed the door while leaving the premises. The guest was reported to be a homeless man who became unruly after he asked to pick up his mail and was told that he had none. The incident was captured on video. The cost of repair is estimated at $500.

Police called the suspect on his cell phone, and he made a partial admission of damage to the door. Police are charging him with maliciously defacing or damaging property.



Bail Set at $10K for Mysterious Motorcyclist Charged with Intent to Distribute Class D Drug

8:43 p.m. An officer stopped a motorcyclist in the area of High Street and Summer Street, due to excessive speed. The cyclist was found to be travelling 63 m.p.h. in a 30 m.p.h. zone in the center of town. However, upon being stopped, the cyclist refused to produce a driver’s license. The rider was wearing a backpack and dressed in a full face helmet and wearing long sleeves, making it hard for police to see him. The rider offered to show police a photo of his license, but declined to produce the actual license, even after being informed it was an arrestable offense. The 26 year-old man from Taunton was arrested.

At the Police Station, the rider’s backpack was discovered to contain over 2 ounces of a controlled substance and other drugs and a large amount of cash. Police charged the motorcyclist with speeding, refusing to identify himself, having no inspection sticker, possession of Class D marijuana, and possession with intent to distribute a Class D drug. Bail was set at $10,000.

Tuesday, August 6th

Drawing a Property Line

8:47 a.m. An officer mediated a resident’s disagreement with surveyors who wished to establish property lines by entering the resident’s abutting property on Burgess Avenue. Police spoke to the parties. The owner denied access to the surveyors. The surveyors were advised to only enter the property after providing prior, written notice.

Suspicious Vehicle in Woods

3:41 p.m. Police received a report of an unfamiliar vehicle pulling into a patch of woods in the area of Carroll Avenue. It was reported to be a grey, Honda Accord. The car was not there when police arrived.

Monday, August 5th

Excavator Vandalized at Construction Site

9:37 a.m. The owner of a construction company, which is working to expand Westwood’s new cemetery on High Street, complained that a Hitachi hydraulic excavator was vandalized. The machine was parked onsite on Friday afternoon. Over the rainy weekend, its lower windshield was smashed, and the cab got soaked. It is unknown whether the mechanical system was damaged.

Missing Medicine

2:49 p.m. An officer responded to Bridges By Epoch assisted living community on University Avenue where staff reported that two doses of prescription medicine could not be accounted for in an internal audit. Management believed that the antianxiety pills, Klonopin, may have been misplaced.

Backflipping into Buckmaster

4:13 p.m. Police received a report that children were backflipping off a tree into Buckmaster Pond in the area of the pond closest to Sheehan School. Police responded but did not find any children swimming.
