The most popular baby names for 2024 were Liam and Olivia, announced the Social Security Administration (SSA) on May 9, 2025, in continuing the agency’s tradition of marking Mother’s Day by announcing the 1,000 most popular baby’s names.
“As Mother's Day nears, we remember the incredible impact that mothers have on our lives,” said Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano, in a statement issued last week. “Growing up with a working mom, I witnessed firsthand the dedication, resilience, and balance it takes to juggle both career and family. Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible mothers in our lives who inspire us and set an example for future generations.”
In 2024, the top ten names were “familiar” ones, says SSA. However, the names that have increased the most in popularity in 2024 appear to be less traditional ones.
Also, Emma and Noah rank as the second most popular names for the sixth consecutive year in 2024, says SSA. Luna has dropped from its spot among the ten most popular girls’ names, replaced by Sofia which enters at number 10 for the first time, according to SSA.
SSA’s list of Top Ten Names:
Most parents apply for their child's Social Security number (SSN) at birth, during their hospital stay, making SSA a source for the most popular baby names, nationwide. A SSN is needed to claim a child as a dependent for income tax purposes or to open a bank account in the child’s name and buy savings bonds.
Social Security began compiling the baby name list in 1997, with names dating back to 1880. Along with compiling the 1,000 most popular names, SSA tracks the names that have increased the most in popularity. In 2024, Ailany, which means ‘chief’, topped the list of girls’ names that have increased the most in popularity. For boys, the name that topped the list was Truce, which means ‘peace.’ Truce rose 11,118 spots from its position on the 2023 list, cracking the top 1,000 at number 991 overall.
