Westwood's Fire Station 1 has been temporarily closed following a structural evaluation, with all operations being relocated to Fire Station 2 "effective immediately," announced Westwood Fire Chief Steven Lund in messaging via ALERT Westwood emails and recorded phone calls around 6:15 p.m. on Monday evening, March 2nd.

Chief Lund's announcement was consistent with an earlier announcement of Thursday, February 26th by the Town of Westwood, which informed residents that the move of all fire department operations to FS2 would begin that evening.

Two apparatus bays have been determined "no longer suitable to house the ladder, engine, or other larger fire apparatus until structural remediation can be completed," said the town on Thursday. Equipment that must be protected from freezing temperatures has been relocated to Fire Station 2.

While all operations including personnel will be housed at FS2 on Washington Street, the town plans to station an engine and ambulance outside FS1 to maintain a strategic presence on the High Street part of town. Additionally, the department plans to call on neighboring towns for mutual aid to support Westwood's response in emergencies.

In his message, Chief Lund reminded residents to call 911 for emergencies "as always." He reassured the public that the department's services remain "fully operational."
