Police Log: Missing Person Searches, Attempt Theft of $166K Mercedes-Benz, and Other Incidents

The news described in this installment of Westwood Minute's weekly Police Log article series is primarily based on selected incidents from the Westwood Police Department's daily log, and information provided by Detective Lieutenant Christopher Aylward and police staff to Westwood Minute through written records and conversations. Occasionally, Westwood Minute may incorporate facts that it obtains from other sources into these stories.

Sunday, June 7

Suspicious Activity at Cemetery

4:05 p.m. Police received a report of suspicious activity at Westwood’s New Cemetery on High Street where it appeared that a casket had been dropped off onto cemetery grounds. Police investigated and learned that the object was a concrete vault, in which a casket will eventually be placed. It was sitting above ground at the time.

Saturday, June 6

Shoplifting Suspect Flees Store

5:24 p.m. A loss prevention staff member of the Target store on University Avenue informed police that a female was observed concealing $60 worth of healthcare products. Upon being confronted, the suspect left the store. The case is under investigation.

Friday, June 5

Suspect Leaves Property When Homeowner Returns

5:51 p.m. A resident of Hartford Street reported suspicious behavior upon coming home to see a teenager in the resident’s driveway. The teen reportedly was walking up the driveway toward the home, but turned around and left when he saw the homeowner come home. The teen, described as wearing green and black, was not located.

Thursday, June 4

Indoor Construction in Early Morning

12:58 a.m. A resident of High Street complained of hearing sounds from construction work taking place inside a neighbor’s home. Police spoke to the neighbor and advised the neighbor that the work, though indoors, was causing a disturbance.

Missing Norwood Man Located in Dedham

1:01 a.m. Norwood Police contacted Westwood Police for mutual aid in locating a male who was believed to be on foot and at risk of harm. Westwood Police responded to the area of Lull Street. The individual was located in Dedham, a few hundred yards over the Westwood town line.

Delivery Person Removed from Store

12:26 p.m. Staff of the Ulta Beauty store on University Avenue requested police assistance with a verbal altercation with a DoorDash delivery person. The delivery person reportedly was arguing with store staff, complaining that staff were not assisting him. Police assisted the staff in removing the man from the store, from which he will be trespassed.

Wednesday, June 3

Noisy Graduation Pool Party

12:08 a.m. Police received a noise complaint regarding a graduation pool party at Carroll Avenue. The residents were advised to go inside the home.

Erratic, High-Speed Driving on High Street

12:12 a.m. Police received a complaint of a newer model BMW or Volvo that was driving erratically and at a high rate of speed on High Street, and which may have turned onto Lake Shore Drive. Police responded to the area but did not locate any vehicle matching that description.

 Destruction of BB Gun

8:54 a.m. A resident of Blue Hill Drive turned over an Airsoft BB gun to police for destruction.

Mistaken Identity at School Field

11:31 a.m. Staff at Thurston Middle School on High Street contacted police after a few students reported a suspicious man taking video of them while they played on the school field during gym class. With the description given, police tracked down the individual. The Westwood resident reportedly informed police he was driving by and believed his grandson to be in the class, and he had wanted to take photos of his grandson to show the family. He informed police that he realized that he had been mistaken and had deleted the photos and had left the school grounds.

Failed Attempt to Steal $166K Mercedes-Benz

6:04 p.m. Mercedes-Benz of Westwood on Providence Highway reported an unsuccessful attempt to steal a 2026 AMG GT coupe, valued at $166,000. It appears someone, under false pretenses, had contracted with a legitimate car transport company to move the car from the dealership to a location in Pennsylvania. Staff of the Westwood Mercedes-Benz dealership suspected the scam and contacted police.

Strange Noises at Night

11:28 p.m. A resident of Forbes Road contacted police after reportedly hearing noises in the house and sounds as if someone was walking around. Police checked the house and found nothing amiss.

Tuesday, June 2

1:17 p.m. A resident of Skyline Drive called police from work, requesting assistance at his home where he reported that a man was violently knocking on the door while his children were inside. Police responded and located two different solicitors, including one for pest control, going door-to-door in the neighborhood. Police advised the individuals that a permit is required for such solicitation in Westwood. Neither individual had obtained a permit.

Monday, June 1

Alleged Theft of Gas During Car Repair

12:05 p.m. Police received a complaint from a customer of a car dealership on Providence Highway. The complainant told police that her car was dropped off for service with a full tank but was returned with half a tank. Police advised her to file a complaint with the business.

Juveniles Attempt to Enter Abandoned House

3:40 p.m. Police received a report from a concerned citizen that a couple of youths were trying to enter an abandoned house on High Street. Police responded and found one youth trying to open the house door. The child’s parents were contacted.

Woman Assisted by Customer Service before Allegedly Shoplifting

5:18 p.m. Police received a report from asset protection staff at the Target store on University Avenue regarding a suspected shoplifting. Staff reportedly observed a customer enter the store for assistance in obtaining items from the customer service counter. While waiting for the assistance, the customer continued shopping, placing approximately $465 worth of store merchandise in her cart, including bedding, rugs, vases, pillows, and a nightstand. She then reportedly returned to the customer service counter to retrieve additional items from that counter. 

Although the suspect paid for the items with which customer service had helped her, she reportedly attempted to exit the store without paying for any of the additional merchandise in her cart. Staff stopped her at the exit. The Stoughton resident was cooperative. She has been charged with shoplifting.

K9 Unit Assists Search for Missing Norwood Man

11:09 p.m. Westwood Police’s K9 unit responded to Ellis Avenue in Norwood at the request of Norwood Police for assistance in searching for a missing person from the Ellis Nursing Home. The K9 unit did not find the man in the area. However, later that evening, a drone deployed by Norwood Police located the man in a nearby park. The man reportedly was sitting there, after being unable to find his way out of the wooded area.
