This week is National Nurses Week. Join BID Needham honor our healthcare heroes.

This post expresses the views and opinions of the author(s) and not necessarily that of Westwood Minute management or staff.

This Nurses Week we're celebrating the highly skilled nursing professionals, like Vicky Detore, BSN, RN, who continue to lead the way in healthcare, helping to heal patients and their communities.

A nurse for 24 years, Vicky believes the most important qualities of nursing include having empathy and the ability to adapt to the specific needs of each patient and their families. When asked about her proudest moment as a nurse, Vicky brought up the turning point in her career: the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I volunteered to work the night shift in the ICU during the worst of the pandemic. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing, but watching the other nurses, doctors, respiratory therapists, etc. was absolutely mind blowing. We were all scared, but we all worked together as a team to help our patients. For patients on the floor, I would do oral care, clean them, reposition them, hold their hands and just talk to them. Without their families, patients were so grateful to not be alone. All I wanted to do was comfort them. That was a time that made me feel like even the littlest things that we all did made the biggest difference in the lives of our patients, their families, and our coworkers."

Thank you, Vicky, for devoting yourself to caring for others.
