Police Log: Shoplifters Resist Identification and Arrest

The news described in Westwood Minute's Police Log article is primarily based on selected information from the Westwood Police Department's daily log and information provided by Lieutenant Christopher Sheehy and police staff. Occasionally, a few facts from other sources may be woven into these stories.

Monday, October 17th

Disturbance in Early Morning

2:31 a.m. A caller reported hearing a male yelling and swearing in the vicinity of Sunrise Road. Two officers were dispatched to the area. They searched for some time, but did not find anybody creating a disturbance.

Sunday, October 16th

Shoplifters Resist Identification and Arrest

6:40 p.m. Police responded to Wegmans where loss prevention staff were with a shoplifter. Store staff had observed a man shopping with a boy, ordering $350 worth of live lobsters. The lobsters were placed in their shopping cart and the two went to the produce section where they met a woman. The woman took the lobsters and exited the store without paying.

Loss prevention staff found the shoplifter in the parking lot and requested that she return the lobsters. She did, and returned to the store with them.

When police arrived at Wegmans, the woman was in the store office with a Spanish translator, because she claimed not to speak English. She appeared unable to produce any identification. Police made the arrest, over the objections of the man. He claimed to be her husband and he physically attempted to prevent the arrest. Both adults were charged with shoplifting and resisting arrest.

At the police station, the woman provided several false names. However, police were able to identify her through her driver’s license which they found in her purse during booking. She is a 30 year-old woman whose only address is a post office box in Brockton. The man is a 19 year-old man residing in Brockton. The boy remained at the police station until the bail commissioner arrived at 10:43 p.m. to set bail at personal recognizance whereupon the two were released.

9:19 p.m. Police responded alongside Westwood Fire paramedics to a call at Budget Inn on Providence Highway. The report was of a possible prescription overdose by a 59 year-old man. The man was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital Needham.



Saturday, October 15th

Disturbance on Pond Street

12:01 p.m. A complaint was received about yelling being heard in the yard of a residence on Pond Street. Police responded and peace was restored.

Thursday, October 13th

Heated Argument within the Family

11:31 p.m. A police officer responded to Gables University Station apartments on a report by Canton Police, who received a complaint from a person who claimed that there was abuse taking place. Upon arriving, Westwood Police spoke to two members of a family who informed the officer that there had been a verbal argument, with no physical abuse. Both family members requested that the officer leave.

Failure to Yield at Intersection Leads to Collision

3:44 p.m. A 2003 Honda driven by a man from Boston collided on Route 1 with a 2012 Mazda driven by a man from Raynham. The Honda was heading south in the area of Seasons convenience store and Dunkin'. The Mazda was exiting the Dunkin’ parking lot to travel on Providence Highway. The two vehicles collided at a 90 degree angle. The Honda was totaled, and its air bags deployed. Its driver received injuries and was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital Needham. The Mazda’s air bag also deployed, and it received damage to the driver’s side. The driver of the Mazda declined medical treatment. Both vehicles were towed from the scene. The driver of the Mazda received a citation for failure to yield at an intersection.

Wednesday, October 12th

Two-Car Collision on East Street

7:00 a.m. Police responded to a two-car accident at East Street and Strafford Road. A teenager from Westwood was driving a 2008 Volkswagen west on East Street. His vehicle was struck by a 2019 Porsche driven by a man from Norwood. The Porsche was making a left turn from Strafford Road onto East Street.

The Volkswagen’s left, front fender was crushed into its left, front tire, rendering the vehicle immobile. It required a tow. The Porsche received minor damage. It was able to be driven away from the scene. No injuries were reported.

Tuesday, October 11th

Sweepstakes Scam

2:39 p.m. A Westwood resident reported a sweepstakes scam to police. The resident received a phone call informing her that she had won a sweepstake and that she should contact “Jeff” in the claims department to verify her personal information. She hung up the phone and recorded the caller’s phone number. Police called the number and found that it was out of service. The resident requested that a record be made of the incident.

Detective Sergeant Assists Norwood Police with Arrest in Westwood

3:36 p.m. A Westwood Police detective sergeant assisted Norwood Police in making a motor vehicle stop and arrest at the intersection of Pond Street and Arcadia Road. The arrest stemmed from an incident in Norwood involving a juvenile.
