The extended period of mild temperatures this spring may make it hard for some to believe that the July summer and Independence Day is just around the corner. Along with pool parties, trips to the beach, barbeques, and trips away, the month of July is also a time for Independence Day celebrations and fireworks.
Wondering about the where and the when? Westwood Minute has compiled a list of local Fourth of July events. They begin as soon as the last weekend of June. It’s organized by date, and then alphabetically by town, to make your holiday planning easy:
Millis
The Town of Millis and Fanelli Amusements is hosting summer carnival at Town Park, 900 Main Street, from June 26th to June 29, with fireworks on June 28. The fireworks show, which is funded by donations, is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. For carnival times each day, click here.
Canton
The Town of Canton holds its Independence Day Celebration on Sunday, June 29th at the Irish Cultural Centre at 200 New Boston Drive. The gates open for this free event at 6:30 p.m. There will be live music along with inflatables and facepainting for the kids. Fireworks are scheduled for 9:00 p.m.
Foxborough
Patriot Place hosts A Patriotic Fireworks Spectacular, with live music from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and family-friendly activities at 2 Patriot Place in Foxborough. Enjoy a special visit by Pat Patriot, New England Patriots cheerleaders, and the New England Revolution Street Team. Fireworks are scheduled to take place around 9:15 p.m. Parking is free.
Needham
The Needham Exchange Club Fourth of July Celebration hosts its Fourth of July celebration at 5:30 p.m. at Memorial Park, with a pie eating contest at 6:30 p.m. and children’s activities that include riding on a pony. Live music will play, and fireworks are scheduled to take place at dark.
Sharon
The donation-funded Sharon Independence Day Celebration is planned begins at Beech Tree Park at 4:45 p.m. where attendees can gather to participate in a red, white, and blue parade march with decorated bikes and strollers to the bandstand in Veterans Memorial Park. Children can enjoy a post-parade frozen treat. Activities at the bandstand also begin at 4:45 p.m., and include a food truck fair, carnival games, train rides, a photo booth, and facepainting. At 8:00 p.m., there’s a pie- eating contest. Fireworks will be fired over Lake Massapoag at 9:15 p.m. (weather-dependent).

Walpole
On Thursday, July 3rd, Walpole holds its annual Night Before the 4th, starting with its 65th annual fire truck parade at 6:00 p.m. The parade route will follow Washington Street to Short, East to Main to Common. Fire departments in the area are invited to participate. The parade is planned to be followed by fireworks, which will be funded by donations to Walpole Recreation.
Needham
Following fireworks in Needham the previous evening, the town on July 4th holds a Grand Parade with community floats that begins around 9:00 a.m. at the Town Common. Participants who want to walk in a children’s parade should gather at Greene’s Field by or before 8:45 a.m.
Newton
The City of Newton's 4th of July is a special time for kids from 10 a.m. to noon at Newton Centre Bowl, where attendees are invited to dress in their patriotic finest and enjoy a pet parade, decorated bike and scooter ride, climb a firetruck, and take part in arts and crafts. Free ice cream will be available and musical guest Matt Heaton will perform.
Take a break for lunch, then return as the celebration continues from 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. There's a carnival by Cushing Amusements (purchases required for rides/games), vendors, a handmade craft fair, food trucks, and music in the evening. Fireworks are scheduled for 9:10 p.m.
Norwood
Norwood's Fourth of July celebration is themed, "Norwood Celebrates Education," and begins at 1:00 p.m. with a Children's Tricycle, Bicycle, Doll Carriage and Historical Character Parade, starting from First Congregational Church at the corner of Walpole and Winter Streets. Additional events are scheduled through the day. At 5:30 p.m., there's a parade with fire trucks, antique and classic cars, and military reenactors, that runs from Coakley Middle School, down Washington Street, to Town Hall.
