To whom it may concern,
Massachusetts needs to update its infrastructure and transit. While MBTA riders endure delays and fires, drivers across the state are also at risk due to the neglect of our roads and bridges. The Orange Line’s current shutdown affects those who commute from 128 and Islington Commuter rail stations, as both lines connect to it.
Approximately ten million vehicles drive over structurally deficient bridges in Massachusetts every day and 25% of Massachusetts’ roads are in poor condition. This issue is not only safety, but drivers on average pay an additional $620 per year to repair damage caused by these roads. We here in Westwood have seen the positive impact fixing these problems can have by the lack of trucks getting stuck under the East Street bridge.
The state must make a major investment in our roads, bridges, and public transit. Question 1 (the Fair Share Amendment) on the November ballot can make safe, efficient, and accessible infrastructure a reality. Although Question 1 only taxes those who earn more than $1 million a year at a slightly higher rate, it would raise up to $2 billion per year for education, public transit, and infrastructure.
In order to prevent greater costs down the line, we must make an investment into our infrastructure and public safety today by voting Yes on Question 1 in November.
