Police Cite Fifteen Year-Old Riding Stolen Moped with Stun Gun on Washington Street
On Tuesday, July 12, 2022 around 6:00 p.m., a Westwood Police officer conducting stationary traffic enforcement on Washington Street stopped a moped with two riders for failing to stop at a red light. The stop resulted in much more than a single citation, however, when the officer discovered the operator to be underage, unlicensed, and in possession of stolen property and a stun gun.
The officer witnessed the silver moped going through a red light and made the traffic stop. Upon requesting the operator’s license and registration for the moped, the officer learned that the driver and his passenger were both 15 year-old boys. Neither had a license. Additionally, the moped was not registered.
A check of the moped's Vehicle Identification Number showed that the moped had been stolen out of Lynn, Massachusetts in May of this year. The officer also discovered a stun gun in the possession of the moped operator. He was both underage and unlicensed to carry the stun gun which requires a firearms license.
Police contacted a guardian for the moped driver and moped passenger. One guardian arrived at the scene, and another met the juvenile at the police station
Police issued the moped driver, a teenage boy from Brockton, a citation for failing to stop at a red light, unlicensed operation of the moped, operating an unregistered vehicle and unlawful possession of a stun gun. He will also be receiving a summons to court for receiving the moped as stolen property. His passenger, a teen from Norwood, was not charged.
Police took possession of both moped and taser, and plan to return the moped to its rightful owner. The moped is a 2021 Amigo and is valued at $1,268.98.
