The above photo, "Earthrise," was snapped by Apollo 8 astronaut Bill Anders on December 24, 1968 while orbiting the moon. The photo captures the Earth rising above the lunar horizon.
As the first color photo taken from space of the only known planet capable of supporting human life, the photo is said to have inspired the environmental movement and played a pivotal part in the origins of the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970. It captures the singleness, beauty, and vulnerability of the globe that we all call home.
