Police Log: Serving Alcohol to a Minor, Hit and Run Car Collision, and Other Stories (Updated)
The news described in Westwood Minute's weekly Police Log article series is primarily based on selected incidents from the Westwood Police Department's daily log, and information provided by Lieutenant Christopher Sheehy and police staff through written records and conversations. Occasionally, Westwood Minute may weave a few facts that it obtains from other sources into these stories.
Sunday, August 18th
Owl Rescue
1:31 p.m. A man called police to report that an owl was trapped in a soccer net on the Sheehan School field. Police along with Westwood’s animal control officer responded. The owl was freed and flew away about an hour after the initial call.
Friday, August 16th
Found Ring
8:59 a.m. A resident found a ring at the CVS store on Washington Street, and delivered the ring to the police station for safe keeping. The ring has an estimated value of $10.
Fraudulent Transfer from Gift Card
12:11 p.m. A resident of Highland Glen Road reported that funds were fraudulently transferred from the resident’s American Express gift card. A few days before attempting to use the gift card at a salon, the resident checked the card balance and found that it held a value of $250. At the time the resident attempted to use the card, however, it showed a zero balance.
The resident contacted American Express and apparently there is a record of the funds being processed to pay a “Paykan LLC.” The transaction occurred on the same day that the resident checked the card balance. The resident reported never having done business with Paykan LLC.
Hit-and-Run on Washington Street
8:23 p.m. A woman from Walpole reported a hit-and-run that occurred shortly after 8:00 p.m. that same evening. She reported that she was traveling in the right lane on Washington Street when a dark colored SUV sideswiped her white, Nissan Versa sedan. The contact caused moderate damage to the Versa’s driver-side and mirror. The dark SUV continued without stopping, turning onto Clapboardtree Street. Walpole resident was unable to provide any further details about the culprit.
Vandalism in Business Parking Lot
8:37 p.m. An officer observed an idling car in the far corner of the Citizens Bank parking lot while conducting a property check of the office building on Station Drive. The officer approached the vehicle and advised its two occupants that the business was closed and that they were trespassing.
After the vehicle left, the officer found graffiti on a guardrail and around the corner of the parking lot. In all, there were about 18 different phrases, symbols, names, marks or drawings.
The property has a history of being vandalized in 2022 and 2023. Police have spoken to the bank’s private security staff and will increase police patrols of the property.
Thursday, August 15th
One Thing Leads to Another
12:33 a.m. Police conducting stationary traffic enforcement on Washington Street queried the license plate for a green, Toyota Rav4 and found that its registration had been revoked for lack of insurance in January. Its inspection sticker had also expired in November of last year.
A motor vehicle stop was conducted. The driver, a woman from Dedham, reportedly was not aware of the lapse in registration. Police cited her for operating a motor vehicle without insurance, operating a motor vehicle with revoked registration, and no inspection sticker.
A Civil Dispute
10:28 a.m. Police were dispatched to a residence on Burgess Avenue to assist surveyors in gaining access to an adjacent property to determine property lines. The property was surrounded by a fence and locked gate. The resident, however declined access and the survey crew and officer left the scene.
Wednesday, August 14th
Just Delivering Flowers
11:30 a.m. A caller reported a suspicious, white Honda Accord sedan on Gay Street and two males walking in the neighborhood around homes. Police determined that the individuals were delivering flowers to residents.
Casing the House or Taking Initiative?
1:00 p.m. A resident of Sycamore Drive reported that a suspicious man was captured on video by the resident’s doorbell camera. He appeared to approach the front door to solicit for something, but when no one answered, he was seen going to the rear of the house. The male was wearing a high visibility vest with the word, “Vision,” on it. He had a tattoo on his left calf and was wearing grey shorts and a blue shirt. Police responded to the home and did not find anything amiss, and no sign of attempted break-in.
Monday, August 12th
Minor Injuries Suspected in Rear-End Accident at East Street Rotary
5:00 p.m. At the East Street rotary, a 2003 Toyota driven by a man from Revere rear-ended a 2025 Honda driven by a woman from Hyde Park.
The trailing vehicle was damaged in the front end passenger area, and the leading vehicle received damage to the driver’s side rear.
A Norwood Fire ambulance transported the woman to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital Needham with suspected minor injuries.
Serving Alcohol to a Minor
6:30 p.m. Police conducted s compliance check of establishments licensed to sell alcohol. At Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza on University Avenue, an underage person ordered a drink and was served a red sangria. At the Courtyard Marriott, an underage person was able to successfully be served a Sam Adams Boston Lager from the hotel bar. Both incidents were referred to Westwood Select Board for possible action.
